Two News Items (February 7, 2026):
-
Construction of the new Puckett Creek bridge has begun. It will be placed across the creek in the next couple of weeks. Please do not play on the structure while work is in progress.
-
The property that the upper reaches of the Purple and Yellow trail traverse, the area that is characterized by a mature hardwood forest, has been sold to a developer (Stanley Martin homes). SM will be building a subdivision on the property in the near future. SM has threatened Scouts Canton with a lawsuit if the trails continue to be used. So that we don't have to close the upper Yellow and upper Purple trails entirely, we have been given a few weeks to create a reroute. Work on the reroute has begun. We hope to have it finished in a couple of weeks. A very rough bushwhacked version already exists, identified by orange flagging ribbon. Feel free to try it out, but be forewarned, it currently is still full of briars.

Tell Me More
What Kind of Work Do We Do?
The work varies from things as simple as picking up trash, to more complex tasks such as removing large trees from trails, and building foot bridges across streams. We anticipate doing the following in the months and years ahead:
-
Removal of fallen trees and brush from trails - always
-
Trail clean-up, such as weed eating and trimming of encroaching brush - especially in the spring and summer
-
Sidehilling of trails - creating level paths on the sides of hills
-
Water diversion - creating and maintaining trail erosion prevention structures
-
Creation of new trails - we anticipate building 2-5 new trails in the next five years
-
Foot bridge construction and maintenance
-
Trail beautification - create "rest" areas along trails that offer picturesque opportunities to relax and enjoy the beauty of the Trace.
Arrangements
-
Typical time for a workday is 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
-
Typical meeting places are at the trailheads in Boling Park and New Hightower Church.
-
Specific details for a particular workday will be posted on this page.
-
Sign up to participate for a work day by clicking on the Going button for the event. This will let the coordinator know how many people to expect.
-
Wear solid shoes. We recommend long pants.
-
Bring water, gloves, hat, insect spray, and a snack.
-
If you have loppers or a string trimmer, bring them as well. Otherwise the coordinator will provide necessary tools.
We want to emphasize - you don't need any experience to perform these tasks. You don't know how to use a chain saw? That's fine, we have people that do. You can help clear the brush they cut. You don't know how to build a bridge? That's fine. If nothing else, you can help carry bridge materials to the site.
More than anything, we invite you to join a community of people who love the outdoors, and love making outdoor experience opportunities available to others. All are welcome.
